How to Type Faster: A Realistic Path from 40 to 100 WPM

Speed is a side effect of not making mistakes. The route from average to fast is mostly about unlearning three habits.

The average adult who uses a computer daily types somewhere around 40 words per minute. Professional typists sit between 65 and 90. Above 100 is uncommon, and above 120 is rare enough that it usually reflects years of deliberate practice. The gap between those numbers is almost never about finger speed.

What WPM actually measures

One "word" in typing measurement is defined as five keystrokes, including spaces. This convention exists so that a test full of short words like "the" and "and" is not easier than one full of long words. Your WPM is therefore:

WPM = (correct characters / 5) / minutes elapsed

Two numbers get reported by most tests, and the difference matters:

  • Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included.
  • Net WPM counts only correct characters. This is the honest figure and the one worth tracking.

The gap between them is the cost of your errors. Typing at 95 raw and 72 net means roughly a quarter of your effort produced nothing.

Why accuracy beats speed, arithmetically

An error is not a neutral event. Fixing one costs you the backspace, the retype, and — much more expensively — the interruption to your rhythm, because you have to visually locate where you are before resuming.

Measured on real typists, a single corrected error costs roughly one to two seconds. At 80 WPM you produce about 6.7 characters per second, so a two-second recovery is the equivalent of thirteen characters you did not type.

This is why 70 WPM at 99% accuracy feels and functions faster than 90 WPM at 88%. The second typist is producing more keystrokes and less text.

The practical rule: if your accuracy is below 96%, do not try to type faster. Deliberately type at 80% of your maximum until accuracy is consistently above 97%, and your speed ceiling will rise on its own.

The three habits that cap most people

1. Not touch typing

If your fingers do not have a fixed home position — left hand on ASDF, right hand on JKL; — then every keystroke begins with a search. You can get to around 50 WPM by hunting quickly, and essentially no further.

Learning proper touch typing is the single largest available improvement for most people, and it is genuinely unpleasant for about two weeks. Your speed will drop to 20 WPM before it climbs past where you started. That dip is the entire cost, and it is worth paying once.

2. Looking at your hands

Every glance down costs you the position you had memorised in the text, and re-entry after looking up is where a large share of errors happen. It also prevents the feedback loop that builds muscle memory: if you locate keys visually, your fingers never learn to locate them by feel.

The fix is uncomfortable and simple — cover your hands, or use a keyboard with blank keycaps for a week.

3. Typing letter by letter

Fast typists do not process individual characters. They process chunks: common letter sequences like -tion, -ing, th, qu, and eventually whole short words, as single motor programs. This is why typing real English is much faster than typing random characters, and why practising on random characters is a poor use of time.

Chunking develops from typing a lot of ordinary prose, not from drilling isolated keys.

Reading ahead: the mechanic nobody mentions

Watch a fast typist and you will notice their eyes are consistently one to two words ahead of their hands. That buffer is what makes the rhythm smooth — the fingers are executing a sequence that was decoded a moment ago, rather than reacting to each word as it arrives.

Building the buffer is a deliberate practice:

  1. Type at a comfortable pace, not your maximum.
  2. Consciously push your gaze one word past what you are typing.
  3. Expect this to feel wrong and to briefly reduce your speed.
  4. Extend to two words once one feels natural.

Most people find this the difference between a jerky 60 WPM and a smooth 80.

Posture and hardware, briefly

These matter less than technique but they are not nothing:

  • Wrists floating, not resting. Anchored wrists restrict your reach to the number row and the outer keys, forcing whole-hand movements that break your home position.
  • Light touch. Bottoming out every key wastes energy and adds travel time. Aim to actuate and release.
  • Key travel. Shorter-travel keyboards (laptop-style, or low-profile mechanical) are marginally faster for most people. The much-discussed difference between mechanical switch types is real but small — perhaps 1 to 3 WPM.
  • Layout. Alternative layouts such as Dvorak or Colemak offer modest efficiency gains, but the relearning cost is measured in months. Not worth it unless you have a specific reason.

A training schedule that works

Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours on Sunday. Typing is a motor skill, and motor skills consolidate through frequent short exposures.

A realistic expectation from that schedule, starting from a hunt-and-peck 35 WPM, is somewhere between 65 and 80 WPM after three months. Getting past 100 typically takes another year of ordinary daily typing, and it happens mostly on its own once the technique is right.

When to stop optimising

There is a point of diminishing returns, and for most people it arrives around 80 WPM. Beyond that, typing is rarely the bottleneck in anything you actually do — thinking is. If you write for a living, the gap between 80 and 110 WPM will change your output far less than an hour of uninterrupted attention will.
